Eleuthera Beach Cleanup

Some of the 4Ocean Team was lucky enough to travel to the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas this past weekend to work with the Bahamas Plastic Movement for a cleanup in celebration of World Oceans Day.

In comparison to some of our other World Ocean’s Day cleanups, Eleuthera was blessed with beautiful weather for the cleanup - allowing volunteers to clean throughout the day and have the most successful cleanup possible! The Bahamas is known for their crystal clear, warm waters teeming with a diversity of marine life. However, beneath the surface and along the shorelines are thousands of pounds of marine debris. This debris comes not only from land-based sources on the island, but from the hundreds of thousands of cruise ships, cargo ships, and other traveling vessels that frequently stop at or pass through the islands.

120 students from 5 different schools attended the event. At the end of the day, everyone came together and was able to collect 1,265 pounds of trash from the beach and shallow ocean. It is great to see that by working together, we are able to make significant differences in the locations we clean!
