In 2016, Hurricane Matthew created millions of dollars in damage to the islands of the Bahamas. Along with this lethal storm came a colossal amount of trash from neighboring islands. Trash and materials from the land were also brought out to sea as the storm swept across the islands destroying much of the foundations and homes in its path. Unfortunately, there is still evidence of the destruction on the islands to this day and there is a growing marine debris problem as garbage from cruise ships and traveling vessels end up on their shores. 4Ocean headed to West End on the Bahamian Island of Grand Bahama to help clean as much trash as possible!
Children, adults, and locals joined the 4Ocean team and worked together to help collect as much trash as possible from the beaches, coastlines, and surrounding mangroves. By the end of a beautiful day of hard work and cleaning, the team successfully removed a huge 1,160 pounds of trash! It is a great reminder that by everyone working together, we can make a real difference for our oceans throughout the world.
Like many people on the islands, Ollie lost everything, including his home, after Hurricane Matthew. He saw first-hand the destruction and debris that came during the lethal storm and knew that even with the devastating aftermath, he was going to help make a difference. Despite losing everything, he has continued to maintain a positive outlook on life. Day in and day out he helps to clean and remove the trash that washes up on the surrounding beaches and coastlines where he resides. Ollie is an inspiration to many and the 4Ocean team encourages everyone to always have a positive outlook on life no matter what - just like Ollie! He is a great example of the accomplishments that can be met by everyone coming together and striving to make a difference.
