Meet Our Wavemaker
T-Shirt Design Winner
Mikaela Walsh, 4ocean Research Analyst
At 4ocean, we wanted to find a way to bring more ocean warriors together to create generational change across the world. We launched an ambassador program to help bring the mission of ending the oceanic plastic crisis to a larger audience. Our 4ocean wavemakers inspire us daily with their passions and make the world a better place.
Wavemaker (noun): A person (or group of people) connected to the ocean who create a positive difference in their community or inspire people to change the world.
We wanted to launch a wavemaker challenge to enhance our program's talented individuals. Our wavemakers competed to create graphic designs that we could put on T-shirts!
Drum roll for our wavemaker T-shirt design winner…
Meet Dori, @bubblydiver! She is a world-class traveler, dive master, graphic designer, educator, and wavemaker.
Her passion for the ocean began at a young age, as she was always amazed by ocean documentaries and scuba divers. She explained that she never imagined she could be one of the divers until she started traveling around Latin America, where she took her first dive course and has been hooked ever since.
We sat down with Dori to understand the meaning behind the magnificent design she created. She encaptured a whale shark because whale sharks have unique patterns of dots, and every whale shark has different patterns. She designed a pattern of different marine animals and plastic bottles. She explained that she did this because plastic is, unfortunately, now part of the ocean.
Being a wavemaker has helped inspire and communicate with fellow ocean warriors to inspire change within the community. It helps connect people and shows how small actions can create big change.
Her favorite sharks are whale sharks and hammerhead sharks.
“We always care about something we know, which is why educating people about ocean animals and plastic pollution is so important.”
Diving in the ocean is getting to immerse yourself in a new world. One major component she has noticed is the amount of plastic debris covering the ocean. When traveling in Thailand, the amount of plastic stagnant in the water was abundant. Furthermore, she describes her dives and how, even in some of the “cleanest” areas of the world, the marine debris found is overwhelming. “Plastic pollution is not just a problem in Thailand or Indonesia; it's everywhere.”
Dori is a remarkable influencer, using her passion for diving to raise awareness about the oceanic plastic crisis.
We are incredibly grateful for all of our 4ocean wavemakers and ocean warriors. We couldn’t do this without your help. Thank you to everyone who joined our ambassador program!
If you love the ocean and want to protect it, we offer a way! We want to build each other within a community of support and apply to become one of our WAVEMAKERS. Join our mission to end the oceanic plastic crisis.
We LOVE our wavemakers!
