Lessons in Sustainability:
Engaging Young Minds at 4ocean Medewi

Ihsan, 4ocean Crew Member

On October 20, 2024, the 4ocean lumber plant in Jembrana, Bali, welcomed a special group of visitors: the students of MI Nurussalam Medewi. This educational outing was not just a field trip; it was a chance for young minds to dive deep into the importance of waste management and the impact of plastic pollution on their environment.

The day began with a warm welcome from the 4ocean team. Our local crew prepared a series of engaging activities aimed at educating the children on the importance of proper waste disposal and recycling.

The team illustrated the different types of plastic waste, how they are recycled, and the consequences of littering. “It’s vital for these children to understand that their actions today can affect the environment tomorrow,” 4ocean crew member Sudirman explained.

Throughout the day, the excitement was palpable as the students learned about the harmful effects of littering on their surroundings. Many left with a newfound appreciation for their environment, understanding that even small changes in behavior can lead to significant improvements in local ecosystems.

The interactions between the 4ocean team and the students were heartwarming. One student shared, “I didn’t know that throwing away plastic could hurt the fish in the ocean!” This kind of awareness is precisely what the team aimed to achieve, reinforcing the idea that every action matters.

While the day was filled with learning and fun, it wasn’t without its challenges. The team faced the difficulty of communicating complex ideas about waste management to a diverse group of children, each with varying levels of understanding. Patience was essential as the crew often repeated information to ensure everyone grasped the concepts.

“Educating young minds requires flexibility,” 4ocean crew member Budi noted. “We had to adapt our approach to fit the needs of each child, especially during hands-on activities near the machines.”

Safety was also a priority during the visit. With several machines operating at the plant, the team ensured that students were supervised closely, especially those who were particularly energetic. Extra guidance was provided to maintain a safe learning environment, allowing the children to focus on absorbing valuable lessons without distractions.

Inspiring Future Environmentalists

As the day came to a close, it was clear that this visit would leave a lasting impact on the students of MI Nurussalam Medewi. They returned home with fresh knowledge and an eagerness to spread the word about responsible waste management.

This initiative is part of 4ocean's ongoing commitment to not just clean up the oceans but to educate future generations on the importance of sustainability. As one member wisely stated, “Today’s children are tomorrow’s stewards of the planet. We must equip them with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference.
