Batubelig Beach, nestled between Berawa and Batu Bolong, is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and lively surf spots. However, beneath the beauty of this beloved destination lies a significant environmental challenge—widespread plastic pollution. During a recent 4ocean cleanup, the team was met with a grim sight: piles of plastic waste covering the beach, overshadowing a newly erected statue that had once stood as a symbol of pride for the local community. Undeterred by the unpredictable weather and the scale of the problem, the team set to work. In total, they collected over 60 sacks of plastic waste, including bottles, bags, shoes, and even a safety helmet. What made this cleanup particularly special was the involvement of local volunteers who, though overwhelmed by the magnitude of the waste, joined forces with the 4ocean team. They brought with them the plastic they had gathered from around the beach, showing a true spirit of collaboration in the fight against pollution. This shared effort was a powerful reminder of the importance of community action in tackling environmental issues and preserving the natural beauty of Bali’s beaches and oceans.

Throughout the cleanup, the team encountered a staggering amount of plastic waste—plastic cups, bottles, shoes, bags, and straws, all scattered across the beach. Among the most unexpected finds was a safety work helmet, an unusual reminder of the diverse ways in which plastic pollution seeps into the environment. The total weight of plastic waste collected came to 1,122.55 pounds, underscoring the severity of the pollution problem that Bali's beaches face. The presence of so many discarded shoes also stood out, a stark reminder of the human activities that contribute to the accumulation of plastic waste on the shore.

As the cleanup wrapped up, Agus, the team captain, shared a poignant thought: “Our actions today can shape the future. Teaching children and younger generations about protecting the environment from an early age is crucial. By educating them now, we are ensuring they grow up with a stronger awareness of how to protect our planet.” His words resonated deeply, as one volunteer from a nearby beach club expressed a similar sentiment: “We all need to do our part—by participating in cleanups, we contribute to a cleaner and safer environment for everyone.” This spirit of collective responsibility was felt across the entire event, with volunteers and team members alike understanding that each small action contributes to a larger, more impactful movement.

The team faced a number of challenges throughout the day. The sheer volume of plastic waste scattered across the beach was overwhelming, and the unpredictable weather only added to the difficulty. The team had to remain adaptable, ensuring they were properly equipped to handle shifting conditions. Yet, despite these obstacles, the team, alongside the local volunteers, pressed on, determined to make a visible difference in the area. Their persistence paid off, and by the end of the day, Batubelig Beach had been cleared of a significant amount of plastic waste, though the battle against pollution remains ongoing.

The presence of so much plastic waste on Batubelig Beach is a result of both local activities and the broader issue of marine pollution. The accumulation of waste is a stark reminder of the need for better waste management systems and greater public awareness. Collaborations like this one—where local communities join forces with organizations like 4ocean—play a vital role in reducing pollution and creating lasting change. The cleanup highlighted not only the environmental impact of plastic but also the power of collective action in addressing this global issue.
