  • Mangroves are the nurseries of the sea

“It’s been estimated that if we don’t reverse the loss of mangroves in the next 40 years, all of the mangroves that aren’t protected will be lost. And that will have major impacts on communities around the world and the fisheries we depend upon every day.”

    Emily Pidgeon

    Conservation International

Mangroves are one of the biggest contributors to the ocean’s biodiversity because so many marine animals give birth or nest among their dense prop roots. They also shelter baby sea animals until they migrate to the reef or open ocean. Many of these species are part of the fisheries humans rely on for food.

Plastic along the coastline is easily trapped in mangroves’ dense prop roots. With each tidal cycle, plastic debris and sediment become more tightly packed, which displaces the animals that rely on the roots’ protection to survive.

Mangroves provide countless other benefits to humans. For starters, they protect coastal communities from floods, erosion, and storm surge. They also help to regulate the climate and counteract the effects of global warming. Yet it’s estimated that we’ll lose these critical ecosystems by 2100 unless we take drastic and immediate action to save them.

In 2018, we donated $10,000 to Conservation International and will donate another $10,000 at the end of 2019. Our donations will be used to support crucial mangrove restoration projects as well as educational campaigns that teach coastal communities how to becomes stewards of these forests.

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
