Where does the money go?

Great question! Your funds go directly to our overall cleanup operation and enable us to clean the ocean, rivers, and coastlines seven days a week around the world. This is a complicated business and requires the right tools and the right people to get the job done. Below, please find just a few of the several things you help support with your purchase.

Our Crews

Cleaning the oceans requires a dedicated team of full-time, professional cleanup crews and other staff members that care deeply about our mission and protecting our oceans and coastlines.

Equipment

Having the right equipment and tools is essential. With several unique terrains and variables, this enables our teams to be as efficient as possible.

Vessels

Due to the variance in cleaning locations our cleanup crews face each day, we require multiple types of vessels to help improve cleanup efficiency in plastic pollution impact zones.

Facilities

Having the right facilities is crucial to our cleanup operations because this is where we store our equipment, vessels, and plastic. In addition, it serves as a homebase for cleanup crews.

Advocacy

Ensuring the clean ocean movement continues to grow is extremely important to our mission. It not only helps to ensure we are funded, it also helps to change public behavior and plastic related legislation.

Education

Continuing to raise awareness is vital to ending the ocean plastic crisis. This includes hosting events, attending speaker panels, social media content, school visits, web series, online classes, and more.

Products

Our product innovation specialists work hard to introduce sustainably sourced and ethically manufactured products that won’t contribute to the usual cycle of overproduction and overconsumption of plastic.

Research + Development

We are always exploring new ways to repurpose the ocean plastic we recover. 4ocean is committed to developing innovative products that help end the ocean plastic crisis.

Pound+ FAQ

What is the Pound+ Program?

As a purpose-driven business and public benefit corporation, 4ocean is unable to accept donations. The Pound+ Program was introduced so that you, the consumer, can directly fund the removal of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines in addition to several other important pieces of our operation. Think of it as a service. You choose how many pounds of trash you want to have removed from the ocean, we send you a certificate to confirm your support, and our cleanup crews get to work and remove those pounds on your behalf. For a long time, members of the clean ocean movement have requested a way to help support our overall operations and clean the ocean without having to receive a physical product and Pound+ is our answer.

Why is it called Pound+

When you pull a Pound+, you’re doing a lot more than removing one pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines. You’re also supporting our entire global ocean cleanup operation by funding new equipment, vessels, cleanup crews, facilities, development of new ocean cleaning technologies, recycling advancements, product innovation, awareness driving tactics, advocacy efforts, and more. There is a lot that goes into cleaning up the ocean and with your support, our crews are able to travel to plastic pollution impact zones, recover the plastic, transport that plastic back to our facilities, sort and clean the plastic, and recycle the plastic for future use. You’re also restoring ecosystems and preventing marine animals from ingesting and becoming entangled in ocean plastic. Together, we can end the ocean plastic crisis.

Why is it $10?

A Pound+ is $10 because that’s the minimum viable amount of funding we need to pull a pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines. A Pound+ costs less than our products because your purchase does not come with a product, which has its own associated costs. Instead, we are providing a service, but that doesn’t mean your $10 doesn’t have a huge impact. In addition to removing a pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines, your Pound+ purchase supports our entire global ocean cleanup operation by funding new equipment, vessels, cleanup crews, facilities, development of new ocean cleaning technologies, recycling advancements, product innovation, awareness driving tactics, advocacy efforts, and more.

Is this a tax deductible donation to 4ocean?

No. As a purpose-driven business and public benefit corporation, 4ocean is unable to accept donations so your purchase of a Pound+ is not tax deductible.

Why am I being charged tax?

If you see sales tax on your Pound+ purchase, it is because your locality requires the collection of sales tax on services provided (in this instance, cleaning the ocean!). While we wish no one was ever impacted by additional fees or taxes, this is unfortunately out of our control.

How is this different from pulling a pound when I buy a product?

There are a few key differences. The first is that this program allows you to pull many more pounds at one time. You can pull 1–1,000 pounds with a single purchase through the Pound+ Program. Since this is a service, you are not receiving a physical product. That means no cost of goods, no packaging, and no shipping, which reduces your personal carbon footprint.

How do I know you pulled a pound of trash on my behalf?

Each time our cleanup crews head out on a mission, they follow a strict documentation policy to ensure everything is done legally and safely. Here’s a step-by-step overview of our documentation process:

  1. The crew arrives early in the morning because most impact areas take several hours (sometimes days) to clean.
  2. Upon arrival, the crew documents the impact zone (prior to cleanup) with a photo.
  3. The crew then gets to work. Throughout the cleanup, they document the operation with photos and video (if applicable). All trash is placed into sacks for storage and future weighing.
  4. Once the cleanup is completed, the crew documents the impact area again. This is not only to show the clean beach or waterway, it’s also to show that the trash was properly removed by our crews.
  5. The trash filled sacks are then weighed. This process is documented by photo and 4ocean TrashTracker log sheet. The log sheet contains the date, time spent cleaning, amount of crew members working, weight of each sack, amount of sacks filled, total weight collected, and a dual authorization signature from the recorder and administrator who double checks the work.
  6. The trash filled sacks are then transported back to the cleanup operation base where the plastic can be sorted and stored for future use in products or get recycled responsibly.

All of this information is submitted to the Better Business Bureau for quarterly review and verification.

How soon do I receive my email certificate?

Immediately after checkout, you’ll receive an email that confirms the pound you’ve helped to pull. It will include a certificate that can easily be shared on your social media channels or even printed.

Can I customize my email certificate?

Right now, we do not have the ability to customize our email certificates but are working diligently to change that. In the future, we look forward to include both your name (or the name of the person you’re gifting a Pound+) and the number of Pounds+ you pulled.

Can I purchase a Pound+ as a gift?

Yes. However, we are not yet capable of having a gift recipient's name added to the certificate. Our suggestion is to purchase the amount of Pounds+ you would like to give, receive your certificate, and send that certificate separately to your gift recipient either digitally or by mail.

What currency is my purchase in?

All purchases on 4ocean.com are in United States Dollars (USD).

What if I want a refund?

If you’re unsatisfied with your Pound+ purchase for any reason at all, please contact our Customer Advocates at info@4ocean.com within 30 days of purchase. Please provide the reason you were unsatisfied with your purchase. Once your refund request is processed, your funds will post back to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Refund requests made after 30 days from purchase will not be accepted.

Who actually removes the Pound+ from the ocean?

We do. This is not outsourced to someone else. 4ocean’s full-time, professional cleanup crews will recover the trash on your behalf. Our crews are made up of individuals from the countries we operate out of. They are each paid an above-average living wage which helps promote local economic growth and raises awareness to the dangers of single-use plastics in these communities.

Where do your professional cleanup crews operate?

Our professional cleanup crews are working hard seven days a week in Haiti, South Florida, Bali, and Guatemala. As our business grows, so will our ability to reach more high impact areas around the world. Together, we can clean the ocean, one pound at a time.

What if I want to remove more than 1,000 pounds?

First, that’s amazing. Second, you can reach out directly to our customer service team to help you with your inquiry by emailing info@4ocean.com.

Why is cleaning the ocean so important?

The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. It provides the air we breathe as it generates over half the oxygen on the planet and at any given moment, 97% of the world’s water can be found in the ocean. This is vital as up to 1/6th of the world’s protein comes from the ocean. It also acts as our biggest combatant to climate change because the ocean is our biggest absorber of carbon dioxide in the world. While in the ocean, plastic not only breaks down into small pieces that can be ingested by more and more sea creatures, but it also acts as a sponge soaking up other chemicals in the ocean that can be poisonous when ingested. Additionally, as plastic breaks down, it releases harmful methane gases which are even more damaging to the ozone and carbon dioxide.

Does cleaning up ocean trash really help?

Yes! By recovering the trash that already exists in the ocean, we can restore ecosystems, prevent harm to marine life, raise awareness around the ocean plastic pollution crisis, and influence individuals, brands, and companies to change their plastic consumption habits. It is up to us, as consumers, to change the demand for single-use plastics and turn off the tap! By leveraging cleanups on the water and driving change on land, we can clean the ocean, one pound at a time.

How did 4ocean get started?

4ocean was founded on the beaches of Bali, Indonesia, where 4ocean founders and co-CEOs Alex and Andrew saw first hand the plastic crisis facing the ocean while on a post graduation surf trip to Bali. There, they came up with the idea to pay fishermen to catch plastic instead of fish that were becoming harder and harder to come by due to pollution in the ocean. From there the 4ocean business model came to be. By purchasing any 4ocean product, you’re funding the removal of one pound of trash from the ocean, coastlines, and waterways.

Are there other ways for me to get involved?

There are a number of ways to make an impact on the plastic pollution crisis. While purchasing a 4ocean product or funding our cleanup operations through the Pound+ Program is a great start, you can also do any one of the following:

  1. Pledge to reduce your plastic footprint and stop using single-use plastic products
  2. Drive change by supporting legislation or a petition that is fighting to stop ocean plastic pollution
  3. Attend or organize a cleanup event in your local community
  4. Continue to spread the word about ocean plastic pollution on your social media channels
  5. Join an organization like ours or another with a similar cause
  6. Donate to a nonprofit organization who is fighting to protect marine life or stop plastic pollution
