  • The great leviathans

Sperm whale swimming off the coast of east Africa
Floating debris in the Indian Ocean

Sperm whales are a major carbon adsorbent, removing the equivalent of the emissions of 40,000 cars each year.

Legendary as “the great leviathans” in Moby Dick and other sailors’ lore, sperm whales are the largest toothed predator on the planet. These behemoths can reach lengths of up to 53 feet and weigh more than 126,000 pounds. Their distinctive box-shaped heads hold the heaviest brains in the animal kingdom, which can weigh up to 20 pounds.

Despite their legendary status, sperm whales make the news more often than they should — and it’s for all the wrong reasons. From Scotland to Sicily, Indonesia to the Philippines, sperm whales are washing up on beaches around the world with bellies full of plastic. One sperm whale had 220 pounds of plastic bags, nets, cups, sandals, and other debris in its stomach.

Besides ingesting plastic, sperm whales can also become entangled in abandoned fishing gear, ghost nets, and buoy lines. By recovering harmful marine debris and taking steps to reduce our dependence on single-use plastic, we can help prevent such needless deaths and make the ocean a safer place for all marine life. Thanks for doing your part.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
