5 Feet Deep in Plastic: The Heartbreaking Reality of Our Polluted Beaches

Dominic Manzo, 4ocean Content Producer

Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Nothing illustrates this reality more effectively than witnessing its devastating impact firsthand. In our latest behind-the-scenes vlog, we take you to Tratas Beach and the Pang Pang River in Java, located to the west of Bali, where plastic waste forms layers as deep as 5 to 7 feet. These heartbreaking scenes emphasize the urgent need to find alternatives to single-use plastics.

Behind the Scenes with Our Crew
At Tratas Beach, the shoreline was buried in plastic waste, stretching as far as the eye could see. This overwhelming sight fueled our crew’s determination to make a difference. In the vlog, Alex highlights the incredible cleanup efforts of our team, resulting in the removal of hundreds of pounds of plastic from the beach. Their relentless dedication reminds us that change is possible, one step at a time.

Transparency and Innovation in Action
At our Java HQ, we shared a meal with the crew and toured the facility to showcase our post-cleanup processes. Alex discusses the infamous Trash Tracker, which ensures transparency in the collection process. Every piece of plastic is logged and accounted for, turning the monumental task of tackling pollution into measurable progress. This system builds trust and inspires hope that we can address this crisis together.

Trash in the Trees
In the second half of the episode, we traveled to the Pang Pang River, where we encountered a similarly distressing scene. Plastic debris was tangled in tree branches, creating a devastating layer of trash over the landscape due to the rising waters during storms. Wearing gloves and filled with determination, Alex and the team worked diligently to remove as much plastic as they could. Observing this situation was both heartbreaking and motivating, highlighting the significance of our mission.
