Battling Plastic Tide: A Cleanup Mission at Bago Mangrove Estuary
Dika, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
The Bago River Estuary, where dense mangrove forests meet sandy shores, hides a growing threat: plastic pollution. On November 25th, 2024, the 4ocean Java River Team, led by Captain Aby Amanda Putra, embarked on a crucial cleanup to protect this vulnerable environment.
The team faced a 45-minute journey from their dock to the Bago Estuary. Braving unstable winds and navigating treacherous mangrove roots, they knew this mission wouldn't be easy.
Upon arrival, the team found plastics trapped deep within the mangrove trees and buried beneath sandbanks. Determined to make an impact, they meticulously dug out waste and disentangled plastics caught in roots.
The Impact
- Plastic Waste: 387.53 lbs
- Non-Plastic Waste: 1,319.90 lbs
- Total: 1,707.43 lbs of trash removed!
Despite challenges like fierce winds and deeply embedded waste, the team’s resolve never wavered. Slow maneuvers, careful digging, and collective teamwork turned obstacles into triumphs.
