Berawa Beach Cleanup: Uniting Generations to Protect Our Ocean

The sun rose over Berawa Beach, casting a golden glow over the waves as locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy the fresh morning air. Food and drink stalls began opening along the shore, serving early beachgoers eager to relax by the sea. However, the remnants of human activity quickly became apparent—plastic wrappers, bottles, and other waste littered the sand, marring the beauty of the coastline.
The 4ocean Denpasar team, led by Captain Agus, wasted no time in addressing the issue. Their focus for the day was the western side of the beach, an area often affected by litter from visitors. As they worked, an unexpected but heartwarming encounter unfolded. A group of elderly locals, who had come to the beach for their morning exercise, took notice of the cleanup. Moved by the team's dedication, they expressed their gratitude, offering cold drinks and even contributing plastic waste they had collected along their walk. Their small yet meaningful gesture reinforced the importance of community participation in protecting the environment.
By the end of the cleanup, the team had removed 231.80 pounds of waste from Berawa Beach. Among the collected debris were plastic bottles, discarded food wrappers, and even a forgotten doll, left behind and buried in the sand. Each piece of waste removed was a step toward restoring the natural beauty of the shoreline.
The team also took the opportunity to emphasize key environmental lessons: the importance of recycling, the dangers of plastic pollution in rivers and oceans, and the benefits of choosing sustainable products. Though the cleanup itself presented no significant challenges, the bigger challenge remains—preventing waste from reaching the beach in the first place.
Protecting the ocean is an ongoing effort, and the 4ocean Denpasar team is committed to leading by example. Through cleanups like these and the support of the community, Berawa Beach can remain a pristine sanctuary for all who visit.
