Clearing the Way: 4ocean Tackles Trash and Weeds in Sumbersewu’s Water Channel

Ucik, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent

On December 12, 2024, the 4ocean Java River Boom Team sprang into action when reports surfaced about trash and weeds blocking the water flow in Sumbersewu Village. Captain Saiful Kirom and his team quickly arrived, assessing the situation and calling for reinforcements from River Boom Team 2. The threat of flooding loomed large—residents feared that heavy rains would push the waste onto nearby streets, endangering their homes.

In response, the team divided their efforts into two groups: one for cutting the grass and the other for collecting the trash. Their hard work, aided by tools like metal rakes and sickles, allowed them to tackle the problem efficiently, clearing the way for the water to flow properly.

The team successfully removed a total of 1,442.99 lbs of waste, including 738.43 lbs of plastic and 704.56 lbs of non-plastic materials. The impact of their work was not just in the volume of waste collected but also in preventing a potential flood disaster for the local community.

The cleanup highlighted how improper disposal can lead to dangerous and costly consequences in a region plagued by waste mismanagement. However, it also showed how the 4ocean team can make a difference when timely action is taken.

“Being part of this team is incredible,” shared Dika, one of the 4ocean Java crew members. “We get to solve real problems for the community, and every challenge brings new lessons. I’m grateful to be part of this journey and excited to see 4ocean grow across Java.”

The team faced the daunting task of lifting the heavy, wet debris from the water channel and navigating the slippery terrain. Close coordination was crucial to prevent injuries and ensure the job was done safely. Despite the difficulties, the team worked together efficiently to complete the task.
