Heavy Flooding Brings Unprecedented Trash
Ucik, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
On December 19, 2024, Nyanyi Beach, renowned for its majestic cliffs and stunning sunsets, faced an unwelcome guest: plastic waste. Torrential rains and floods upstream carried a deluge of trash, depositing everything from plastic bottles to microplastics onto the once-pristine shore.
For the 4ocean Denpasar team, it wasn’t just another cleanup—it was a mission to restore one of Bali’s iconic beaches and remind visitors of their role in preserving the environment.
The team, led by Captain Agus and supported by dedicated members like Pak Ketut, Wiradana, and Putu Adi, tackled the overwhelming volume of trash with determination. Slippery terrain and steep stairs made the work grueling. Carrying trash bags filled with plastic bottles, helmets, straws, and food wrappers up the steep pathways tested their endurance.
Despite these challenges, the crew pressed on, driven by a shared belief: “Don’t be selfish by throwing trash carelessly into the sea or rivers. Remember, other creatures live there too,” one team member reflected.
Their efforts not only cleared the beach but also sent a powerful message to visitors, who, though numerous, seemed indifferent to the waste surrounding them.

The sheer scale of the trash illustrated the urgency of addressing plastic pollution at its source. While the team filled bag after bag with waste, they also envisioned a future where these cleanups might become unnecessary—where people understand the consequences of their actions and make more sustainable choices.
As one crew member put it,
“Every good deed we do will eventually come back to us.”
Nyanyi Beach’s plight highlights a broader issue faced by Bali’s coastal areas. Floods and poor waste management continue to threaten the region's natural beauty. The 4ocean team hopes their efforts inspire visitors and locals alike to take responsibility for their surroundings, starting with small actions like proper disposal of trash.
The cleanup wasn’t just about removing waste; it was about creating ripples of awareness that could lead to lasting change.
