Resilience Amid Floodwaters: Cleaning Up Wringin Puti Pier and Stail River
Dika, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
Heavy rains from morning until night caused the Stail River to overflow, flooding communities near Wringin Puti Pier. The floodwaters wreaked havoc, sweeping boats ashore, damaging docks, and carrying fishing tools away. Among the affected areas was the 4ocean Java boat dock, which bore the brunt of the powerful currents. The scene was dire: plastic waste and debris blanketed the pier and surrounding areas, turning this vital hub for fishermen and visitors into a polluted and damaged landscape.
Captain Aby Amanda Putra (Aby) led the 4ocean Java River Team with a swift response to the crisis. Armed with equipment and determination, the team focused their cleanup efforts on Wringin Puti Pier and along the Stail River. The pier, as a primary access point for local fishermen and visitors, was a top priority.
The cleanup involved multiple steps:
- Clearing debris around the pier.
- Surveying and removing waste along the river using the 4ocean boat.
- Transporting waste back to the pier for weighing.
- Delivering the results to the 4ocean Java base.
The team collected an impressive 508.43 lbs. of plastic
Team member Zulham Widya Mukti shared his thoughts on the experience:
“I am very proud to be part of 4ocean. There are so many positive things I have learned from all the work I do in the field. Moreover, I feel satisfied to be able to help address the issues faced by communities affected by plastic waste, making their situation better. My love for challenges has been fulfilled since I started working at 4ocean. For me, challenges are tests to accomplish a mission that eventually lead to rewarding results.
I love you, 4ocean!"
The team faced significant challenges during the cleanup. The floodwaters left waste soaked and tangled in plant roots and thorny areas. Handling wet waste made the cleanup results heavier, and thorns posed a risk of tearing gloves and injuring hands. Despite these obstacles, the team adapted their approach:
- Water content in waste was minimized before weighing.
- Bamboo tools were carefully used to separate thorns from debris, protecting both crew and equipment.

The extreme weather highlights the dangers of improper waste disposal. Floodwaters transport discarded trash into unexpected areas, polluting rivers and communities alike. The 4ocean Java River Team’s efforts underscore the importance of collective action to prevent such environmental disasters. By educating communities and tackling waste head-on, they are creating a cleaner future for everyone.
