Tratas Beach Rescue: Precision Zoning Clears Mountains of Waste

Dika, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent

On December 2, 2024, the 4ocean Java Beach Team—led by Ari Surya Prayoga (Yoga) and joined by Chika Candila Raksa, Dwi Agus Saputra, Indra Dwi Pramono, Krisna Iza Rabindra, Raka Bahtiyan, and Dian Angga Saputra—took on one of their most challenging cleanups to date. Tratas Beach, a vital docking point for fishing boats in the Muncar area, was overwhelmed with waste. To tackle the overwhelming volume, the team implemented a zoning system and brought along iron rakes for maximum efficiency.

The day began with meticulous planning. Yoga directed the team to divide the beach into manageable 3x6-meter sections, allowing them to focus on clearing one area at a time. With iron rakes in hand, the crew separated plastic waste from the wood debris and branches that had piled up along the shore. It was grueling work. Every sack filled and every zone cleared brought a small victory, but new challenges quickly followed.

Despite the systematic approach, the sheer weight and volume of waste made progress slow. The team collected a staggering 392.97 pounds of plastic. Each load had to be hauled 100 meters to the weighing area and then transported by truck—a logistical challenge made even more difficult by the narrow roads.

For Yoga, this cleanup wasn’t just about clearing trash but offering hope and a sustainable solution to the local community. As he reflected, "Tratas Beach is crucial to the Muncar area. Many fishing boats dock here daily, yet waste continues to plague this beach. Our team is committed to finding better systems for cleaning and managing this waste. We won’t give up."

Yet, challenges persisted. Tides would frequently wash in new debris, undoing hours of hard work. The team faced the tedious task of separating branches from trash and navigating roads too narrow for their truck. Still, they pushed forward, determined to leave Tratas Beach cleaner than they found it.

A hopeful moment came when a few locals expressed interest in the cleanup effort. Though community awareness remains low, the team's persistence is planting seeds for change. The 4ocean Java team knows the road ahead is long, but each cleanup brings them closer to their goal of a cleaner, healthier coastline.

By day's end, the team had made a significant impact. The zoning system allowed them to manage the vast area methodically, and the results spoke volumes. The team’s efforts not only cleared waste but also highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions and community involvement.

The fight against ocean plastic is far from over, but at Tratas Beach, hope is alive—and so is the commitment to protect our shores.
