Turning the Tide on Waste: A Cleanup Mission Near Samblong River
Kubik, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
On January 5, 2025, the 4ocean Jembrana team, joined by Riverboom 02 crew members, set out to explore the Samblong River in Bali. High water flow made it impossible to install a trash net, leading the team to embark on a boat journey to assess the area. Along the way, they were treated to calming sights of storks and seagulls perched on mangroves. However, their serene exploration was interrupted by an encounter with a large monitor lizard—a thrilling moment that left them both awed and cautious.

The team immediately mobilized to clean the pond. Overcoming difficult terrain, sharp mangrove roots, and scorching heat, they worked tirelessly to collect 1,466 lbs of waste. Despite the challenges, their teamwork and resilience paid off, transforming the neglected pond into a cleaner, safer environment.
The experience deeply impacted the crew. Reflecting on the mission, they shared:
“The mountain of plastic waste we encountered is not a natural phenomenon, but the result of daily human activities. This situation reflects the need for better waste management and heightened awareness among the local community about the dangers of pollution. Every small piece of waste we successfully removed feels like a victory for nature.”
The cleanup team faced significant challenges, including scorching weather, uneven and muddy terrain, sharp mangrove roots, and limited access to the site. Despite these hurdles, their unwavering determination and strong teamwork proved invaluable. Together, they navigated the harsh conditions and successfully removed a substantial amount of waste, demonstrating resilience and a shared commitment to restoring the environment.
The cleanup team’s resilience and teamwork not only helped them overcome scorching weather, muddy terrain, and sharp mangrove roots but also ensured the success of their mission. Their efforts culminated in the collection of an impressive 1,466 pounds of waste, ranging from single-use plastic bags and PET bottles to used sacks and fabric. Among the most poignant discoveries was an abandoned pond, a stark reminder of the environmental consequences of unchecked waste disposal. This cleanup mission in Samblong not only restored a critical natural area but also underscored the importance of collective action in protecting our planet.
