Turning the Tide: Restoring Kedungu Beach from Washed-Up Trash
Ucik, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
The rainy season in Bali doesn’t just bring life-sustaining water; it also brings a tide of trash. Kedungu Beach, a favorite among surfers for its idyllic waves, was overwhelmed by plastic waste washed ashore. Plastic bottles, microplastics, straws, food packaging, and even surprising finds like helmets were hidden along the rocks and shoreline.
Accessing this stunning yet steeply cliffed beach was no easy task. The 4ocean Denpasar team, led by Captain Agus, faced slippery terrain and an overwhelming amount of waste. Yet their resolve never wavered. “Because if not us, then who will care?” became the rallying cry of the day.
Despite the challenges, the team’s efforts yielded impactful results. Key activities included: collecting large and small plastic items, such as bottles and straws, removing microplastics embedded in sand and rocks, and hauling unique finds like helmets, highlighting the variety of waste that ends up on shorelines.
The importance of their mission echoed in a powerful statement from the team: “Don’t be selfish by carelessly throwing trash into rivers or oceans. Rivers and oceans don’t belong solely to humans; other creatures inhabit them too.”
The slippery, steep terrain of Kedungu Beach demanded extra caution and teamwork. The sheer volume of waste posed an additional challenge, requiring patience and persistence. The team’s determination to restore this beautiful beach kept them going despite the obstacles. Their dedication serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship.
The 4ocean Denpasar team’s work extended beyond cleanup. By removing waste and advocating for environmental awareness, they sent a clear message: every piece of trash picked up is a step toward protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring the beauty of Bali’s beaches for future generations.
